Fall/Winter 2017 Highwire Sketch Team Submissions

Highwire Comedy Co. is now accepting applications for the Fall/Winter 2017 Season of Highwire Sketch Teams! We are seeking writers, performers, and writer/performers who are willing to make a six month commitment to creating outrageously funny sketch comedy. The season will be from September 2017 - February 2018. Teams will work with a director to create brand new shows that will be performed either once or twice per month on Saturday nights at 9pm. If you’re interested in joining the sketch comedy revolution, apply now! All applications must be received by Monday August 14!  

Please see below for all the application instructions and expectations. Read through them very carefully before submitting.

Show Expectations

  • All shows will be on regularly scheduled Saturday nights at 9pm. Two teams will perform in each show.
  • Teams will have 20-25 minutes to perform in each show.
  • Teams will be scheduled to perform once or twice per month.
  • All material must be made up of original sketches specifically written for your Highwire Comedy Co. sketch team. The sketches in the shows must not have been performed somewhere else previously.
  • Each show will contain the strongest material as selected by the team’s director. There is no guarantee that every writer will get a sketch in each show or that every actor will be featured in each show.
  • All sketches are to be written by the writers on the team and performed by the performers on the team. Outside talent (writers, actors, etc) may only be used at the director’s discretion if absolutely necessary.

Team Expectations

  • Sketch teams meet weekly
    • Each sketch team member is responsible for paying their director a flat rate of $10/week. 
    • The team members are responsible for securing a meeting location
  • Sketch team members must be available for a three hour tech rehearsal before each show. The date and time are TBD.
  • Sketch team members have to attend all meetings and shows required by the director.
  • Please devote enough time to the team
    • Please make sure you can fully commit before applying. 
    • Please avoid scheduling conflicts (work, other rehearsals, other shows, etc) during your techs, shows, rehearsals, or meetings.
  • Sketch team members must be fully prepared at meetings and rehearsals. 
    • Writers should have sketches and rewrites ready.
    • Performers should be familiar with sketches for table reads and off book for last rehearsal and tech.
  • Sketch team members are expected to help promote their shows.

Expectations, prerequisites, and application instructions for each role are below:

WRITERS

Expectations and Requirements

  • Attend one 3 hour writing meeting per week. The location and times of the meetings are up to the team and director.
  • Bring in a minimum of one new sketch per week.
  • Attend all performance rehearsals and tech rehearsals of the sketches you wrote.
  • Be respectful and considerate during writing meetings. 
  • Rewrite material and meet deadlines set forth by their director.

Prerequisites

  • You must meet any of the following prerequisites: 
    • Completion of (or current enrollment in) Highwire Sketch Writing Level 3
    • Involvement in a past or present Highwire Sketch team (in any role).
    • Similar sketch writing experience somewhere else as well as a reference we may contact by email at that institution.

  1. A cover letter that includes your relevant sketch writing experience both at Highwire and elsewhere. If your experience is primarily elsewhere, you must provide a reference to contact (email address).
  2. A single PDF of a sketch writing sample:
    • At least two sketches
    • No more than 10 pages

PERFORMERS

Expectations and Requirements

  • Attend a 2-3 hour performance rehearsal the week leading up to the show. The date and time will be decided on by the team.
  • Attend tech rehearsals, table reads, and any additional rehearsals.
  • Be completely off book by the final rehearsal.
  • Performers may not write their own material. However, they can collaborate with writers outside of rehearsals to help create characters and sketches.
  • Perform sketches as they are written. Do not resort to improvisation -- be prepared.

Prerequisites

  • You must meet any of the following prerequisites: 
    • Completion of (or current enrollment in) Improv For Actors 
    • Completion of (or current enrollment in) Improv Level 4
    • Involvement in a past or present MegaVolt team
    • Involvement in a past or present Highwire Sketch Team (as any role).
    • Similar performance experience somewhere else as well as a reference we may contact by email at that institution.

  • A cover letter that includes your relevant performance experience both at Highwire and elsewhere. If your experience is primarily elsewhere, you must provide a reference to contact (email address).
  • A headshot
  • A PDF of your acting resume
  • A SINGLE link (Youtube or Vimeo preferred - with password if it is PRIVATE) to a 3-5 minute sample of your work as a performer. This can be previous work or something specifically prepared for this application and can be any of the following: 
    • a reel
    • a recording of a staged sketch
    • a video sketch
    • a monologue directed at a webcam
    • really anything you feel showcases you as a comedic performer

You will be informed by Thursday August 17, if you have been selected to audition in person.

In-person auditions will be held Sunday August 20 from 11a - 4p at Highwire Comedy Co. Please try to be available for that date otherwise you might not be able to be considered for a performer slot for this sketch season.

For the in-person audition:

  • You will perform two sketches (with another actor) assigned 2-3 days prior to the audition. You must be completely off-book for these.
  • You might cold read some sketches.

WRITER/ PERFORMER

Expectations and Requirements

  • Meet all writer AND performer expectations and requirements.
  • Write for other performers as well as for themselves. There is no guarantee that you will perform in your own sketch.

Prerequisites

  • All writer AND performer prerequisites.

  • Please indicate if you are willing to be considered as a writer ONLY or actor ONLY if you are not selected for a writer/perform er position. This preference will not be held against you.
