Sketch Writing Classes
If you want to learn how to write the kind of sketch comedy you see on SNL, Key & Peele, Portlandia, and more -- Highwire Comedy Co.'s sketch writing program is for you. These classes will teach the mechanics behind what makes a great sketch work and the discipline to help you become a great writer. Each student will receive constructive feedback from experienced instructors from week to week. Our intro class wraps up with a staged reading of sketches written in class and our advanced classes end in a performance cast from Highwire performers.
Level 1: Fundamentals of Sketch Comedy Writing
Our entry level sketch writing class teaches the skills that will help you become a better sketch comedy writer. Through a series of lectures and writing assignments you will learn how to develop your ideas, nail down a premise, create strong characters, and understand what makes a good sketch work. Low pressure and lots of fun!
No experience required.
Class Time: [Sundays 3:30p-6:30p] (6/10-8/5, no class 7/1)
This class concludes with a staged reading of material written in class.
Level 2: Intermediate Sketch Comedy Writing
Writers delve into more advanced techniques and experience what it is like to be a writer for a sketch comedy team. Over the course of eight weeks you'll learn how to craft sketches stronger and expand your portfolio. Students will collaborate with a team of writers and learn how to generate ideas in a writer's room environment. Writers will be given in-depth critical feedback of their material and should expect to finish the class with a portfolio of original scripts.
This class concludes with a show where students will experience first hand the casting, rehearsing, and directing of their work for the stage.

Prerequisite: Level 1 Fundamentals of Sketch Writing
Level 3: Advanced Sketch Comedy Writing
Sketch 3 explores the process of creating a live sketch show. Writers have the opportunity to work with and write for actors cast in the show (writers are not expected to perform). Session ends with a performance of the show.
