The Intro to Stand-Up Class focuses on creating comedy’s gold standard, the 5-minute set. In just 8-weeks, you will understand the basics of joke writing, discover your voice, and graduate in front of a live audience. All comedians have to start somewhere, and establishing a strong foundation based on writing techniques and self-discovery can set your comedic goals into action. Joel’s unique “finding your system” method of teaching comedy equips students with the knowledge, skills and writing habits necessary to turn their thoughts into comedic material ready for any audience.

Take your comedy to the next level with advanced performance techniques and business insights that will transform you into a fearless performer and savvy negotiator.

The Advanced Comedy Class is for Intro Class graduates inspired to continue on the journey of refining their comedic craft, with a focus on performance and an intensive look of what really goes on behind-the-scenes. You will graduate with an enriched stage presence and an expanded business acumen that will empower you to become a more confident and self-sufficient comedian. Not only will you be able to apply the learning from this class to your routine, but you will have the benefit of stage-time and experience to improve your set and overall comedy comprehension. After graduation, you will possess a HD recording of your set ready for bookers, festivals, and TV!

About your instructor:

Joel Byars has years of experience performing and teaching sketch, improv, and stand-up around the world, but Atlanta is his home.

He is the weekly host of Creative Loafing’s “Best of Atlanta Podcast” Hot Breath! Podcast and “Best Local Comedy Show” Funny Monkey at Java Monkey. Joel develops this work ethic while sharing the stage with veteran comedians like Ron White, Brian Regan, Kathleen Madigan, Louie Anderson, and Margaret Cho.

His most recent accolades include writing for Comedy Central’s Roast Battle at the prestigious Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and being crowned the winner of both Atlanta’s 2017 Rev’d Up Comedy Jam and 2016 National Champion of Search For The One Comedy Competition in Washington, D.C.
